Golf Instruction
The Short Game Simplified, Part III
by Corey Baehman, PGA, Head Golf Professional

Most golfers understand the importance of the short game and its impact on the scoring aspect of the game.  What most players do not realize is the fact that there are three distinctly different short game shots.  Putting, Chipping and Pitching.  All three have their own set of pre-swing and in-swing fundamentals.  This month I will go into detail with pitching and explain some of its unique features.

Pitching

Under certain situations where you have minimal green to work with or an obstacle to hit over the pitch shot is your best option. Generally speaking if you can’t putt  then chip, and if you can’t chip then pitch. It is the lowest percentage of all three shots to execute due to the length of the swing and the touch required. The best way to view this shot is to think of it as a miniature full swing. The majority of miss-hits from pitching the golf ball are caused by deceleration, which happens when the down swing is slower than the backswing. By being deliberate with your backswing the chances of acceleration through impact are much greater. This acceleration gives the ball a higher trajectory and increases spin. Club selection is also important, with the lob wedge or sand wedge being used a majority of the time. Ball position is equally important when pitching to create a high shot. Keep the ball left of center to get the true loft off your wedge, anything right of center (for a right-handed golfer) will bring the trajectory lower.

So as you can see, understanding the differences between the three distinct short game shots will help you be decisive and promote confidence around the greens. It has been my experience to learn that the short game is 10% technique and 90% touch. Which means get to know the short game practice area, it’s your fastest route to lower scores!

Congratulations to the following teams who placed at the top of the four-man Par Three tournament November 5th.

1st Place: Cary Marmis, Art Tesi, Jeff Prileson, Andy Genor

2nd Place: Pat Griffin, Richard Leslie, Rick Jaep, Bud Hornback

3rd Place: John Sights, Peter Switzer, Barry Polivka, Mike Ramsey

Ken Hall and Tom Rogers were the closest to the pin winners, and Larry Minich walked away with the $125 Grand Door Prize drawing.

The next event will be the ever popular Ryder Cup Tournament. The Golf Shop will establish two evenly matched teams, the “Red and the Blue”, based on handicaps. Then each foursome will have two members from each team competing against each other for points. A lot of fun, and with this format, it is guaranteed that half of the participants will place in the money! It is scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd with an 8:00 shotgun start. Please sign up in the Men’s Locker room. The new 2012 officers will be announced afterward at the luncheon.

At the November MGA meeting, several new changes were approved by the committee.

  • MGA tees will no longer be used for MGA events; “85 Rule” participants will be allowed to play from the copper tees from now on.
  • All future Saturday MGA tournaments will start with an 8:00 shotgun.
  • We will be adding a “Member-Guest” event to our schedule in 2012.
  • The food/beverage allowance for those participating in “Mini MGA” events will be increased to $15.

Fitness News
by Kent Instefjord, Club Manager
We are pleased to report, after months of speculation, misunderstandings, and on-going repairs and maintenance…we are now assured of all new equipment for the cardio and weight rooms at our Fitness Center. We expect delivery and installation to occur shortly after the new year.  The Fitness Area may be down for a couple of days as we remove all of the old equipment and install the new equipment.

In addition, the property improvement plan which has been submitted as a part of the reorganization plan, contains necessary dollars to upgrade the fitness area flooring, ceilings, and other amenities. The timing of this project is still unclear, but we will keep you updated as we enter the New Year.

Lastly, we have purchased new steamers for the Fitness Center locker rooms. These new models are being built and we expect delivery in late January.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while we have worked diligently to get this project pushed through and accomplished.

Need instructions on how to use the fitness equipment properly?  Want to know how to stretch correctly before and after a workout?  Just sign up for your Member Personal Training session with Gina Rhine!  The first session is free, the second session is just $5.  Times with Gina can be scheduled at your convenience, Tuesday through Friday.  Please call the Tennis desk at 577-5888 to schedule with Gina.
