January Golf Tip
by Corey Baehman, Head PGA Professional

As we have all realized through our golfing careers there is no secret to the golf swing. We all understand that sound fundamentals and consistent practice are the keys to improvement. However, in my experience there is one thought that is a borderline secret to great ball striking.

The concept is simple but not understood by most golfers. The “secret” is to understand what parts of our bodies we use to swing the golf club. Many players fall into the habit of swinging the club almost entirely with their arms. They don’t rotate their shoulders or hips and tend to finish their swings “flat-footed”. By turning the lead shoulder to a position even with the ball we can achieve a full weight transfer and establish the coil needed for maximum power. By unleashing the shoulders on the downswing momentum will carry your weight to your front foot and your chest will be facing your target. Using the shoulders to swing the golf club will allow you to feel the club stay in sync with your hands and the clubhead and give you maximum clubhead speed. Trying to coordinate all the little muscles in the hands and arms is near impossible. To feel this concept a great drill to do is the “body motion drill”. Simply rest the club up on your shoulders and assume a golf posture. Make some turns with your lead shoulder so your back faces the target. Repeat this drill 20-30 times every few days and you will start to feel what a “big muscle” swing should feel like. Try this “secret” next time you’re on the range, I bet you will pick up some distance and consistency.

Happy new Year to all.  Our two December "highlights" - the President's Cup and the Holiday Party were a bit tarnished with coldness but the shows went on!!  A hearty congratulations to the brave women who participated in the President's Cup.  The results:  Karen Gerhart, 1st place, Sheku Massarat, 2nd place, Cathy Enlow, 3rd place, Donna Roach, 4th place.  The golf event was cancelled for the Holiday Party, much to the relief of many.  Instead, our members donned some of their holiday finery and enjoyed a great lunch (and a little wine) with a short meeting and greeting from Grant Cesarak of Rural Metro Fire who spoke on behalf of KVOA's Season of Hope.  Our members of the 9 Hole and the 18-Hole groups came together and showed the Christmas spirit is indeed alive and well.  The four charity boxes were overstuffed with food, toys, clothing and monetary donations.  Here's to warmer days in 2012!

What started out being a lovely month turned into a very rainy one!  We had 21 players signed up for the Holiday Scramble and luncheon on December 14 but alas, no golf!  But a very lovely luncheon neverthelessw - and didn't we all look smashing!  Thanks to Elaine Cohen for putting together a wonderful luncheon, the food was terrific and the decorations were perfect.
Hopefully the new year will be good for golf.  You can sign up in the ladies locker room for all of our upcoming golf events.

In keeping with the statistic related theme from last month's newsletter, we have an exceptional statistic of three inches of rain that fell in December.  With this winter in the La Niña pattern we are supposed to be experiencing warmer and dryer conditions than normal, but the December rain just goes to show that nature doesn’t always follow the rules.

So what does this rain bring us besides being cart path only?
The rain helps the golf course by flushing out harmful salts and other minerals that accumulate in our soils by using effluent irrigation water.  However, the rain also flushes out helpful minerals such as calcium and potassium so that needs to be brought back through fertilization.  But, all in all, you can’t really put a price on how good that rain is for our course.

For the remainder of our winter season we will be focusing on the fertility of our winter ryegrass as well as our bermudagrass base with both granular and spray products.  We will continue to keep our dormant areas clean and free of rouge grasses and weeds, and aside from a few very rainy days, we have kept on schedule.  We will also continue with tree pruning and mistletoe removal during the frost delayed mornings.

We will be closely monitoring green speeds on Hill and Ridge to make sure they are kept at an appropriate speed.   While we are still working out a few details in our spray program, both Hill and Ridge greens have held to an acceptable color and have performed as expected.  It's exciting to think what it will be like next year at this time when all three nines have one uniform putting surface.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your donation to the employee holiday fund.  It truly goes a long way to help the golf maintenance and landscape staff make their family's holiday season brighter.
