Club Manager Report
by Kent Instefjord
I remember when all of the rust belt cities started to lose residents to the sun belt and a comment would frequently be said “would the last person to leave Toledo please turn out the lights!” While thankfully Tucson is not in that position, LPCC gives off that feeling in late spring when so many of our partial year members leave for a few months. I want to thank all of our members for their support of the club over the past year and assure everyone that the best years still lay ahead. During the summer, our staff will be working to ensure we are prepared for the upcoming 2012-13 season. One project will be to work on communication tools, namely our new website. For the time being however, please continue to watch for “The Week Ahead” blast sent out on Thursdays as well as the monthly newsletter. For those who do not receive the e-mails, we will be posting “The Week Ahead” outside of the golf shop as well as in the lounge, just outside of the Grill. We will be publishing a “Champions Edition” in July, to honor and celebrate all who participated in events over the past year.
There will be many major projects underway or completed by the first of the year…all hotel rooms will be renovated as well as hotel banquet space. Our Canyon greens will be open for play in September and quite possibly we will be playing out of new bunkers. We will have newly resurfaced hard tennis courts as well as new golf cars. It will be a hectic, but an exciting year to come.
I would like to personally wish all of you a very safe and memorable summer and I look forward to everyone returning for a great season of fun in the sun!

SuperViews
by David Stout, Director of Agronomy
The 'summer season' for golf course maintenance staff really means 'renovation season'. We are in full swing of the Canyon greens renovation project and all is going well. Similar to Ridge during last summer, we have found the original edges of the greens and all I can say is that there will be some great new pin placements that haven’t been seen in a very long time. So how do we lose the original edges anyway? This happens for a variety of reasons, but the most common is referred to as “greens creep”. This can occur when we mow the edges of the greens and don’t go all the way to the edge. Our staff does not want to scalp into the collar, so more often than not, they err on the inside by as little as 1/8 of an inch. Over time this can add up to a huge number if not controlled. In fact, we’ve recovered as much eight feet on the left side of Canyon 9 green. It is an outstanding number when you think about it and we have control measures in place to make sure this never happens again. That is why you will occasionally see small paint dots or dashes around the edge of the greens during various times of year. This will allow our edges to stay true to what was intended by Jack Nicklaus many years ago. Aside from Canyon greens, we are working on getting the Ridge and Hill greens as smooth and consistent as possible. We will be frequently topdressing, verticutting, and rolling to make sure that all 18 of the open greens are rolling as similarly as possible. I would expect them to be similar in speed, and shot holding, by the middle of July. Lastly, we are scheduled to grass Canyon greens the week of June 26th and will have them open for play around the Labor Day holiday.
